What is Dichroic
NASA designed dichroic Glass for use in the space industry.
Dichroic means “ two colours” and it is made up from layers of oxides, such as gold, silver, titanium, silicon, chromium, aluminium, zirconium and magnesium. These metals are then deposited on to the surface of a glass sheet in a high temperature furnace.
An electron beam then vaporizes these metal oxides and the rotating glass is evenly coated with many thin layers. The resulting thickness ranges from 1.5mm to 3mm.
When Dichroic glass is viewed at slightly different angles, you see a variety of different colours as you rotate the glass. The many colours of Dichroic glass are often described as natural fire opals, or peacock feathers.
When Dichroic Glass became available to the public in America it opened up a whole new industry and creativity for the artists. Now it is worldwide and still growing.
Because of the different firing times and techniques used by the individual artists it is impossible to have two pieces alike.
Many can have the same colours but never are they the same, so when you buy an item made with Dichroic Glass you will know that it is as unique and individual as the person that purchased it.
